I have traveled all over the world but nothing is to be compared to the joy i felt
visiting Tina Turner's hometown of Nutbush, Tennessee. After performing for a fabulous
group in Knoxville, I took the 6-hour journey to Nutbush. This is a town that is so small
that most people, even locals hadn't heard of it. On the way we stopped in on a few towns,
and as it happened what seemed to be a regular rest area. It was no ordinary rest area,
it was the Isaac Hayes/ Tina Turner/ Booker T official rest stop. What's the chance of
that? I immediately got dressed up and took pictures at this rest area located on the
Music Highway. About an hour later, we find ourselves in a small town called Brownsville,
(I know the turn to Nutbush is around here somewhere!!!) After a little bit of enquiring and
people asking, "Why do you want to go THERE?" we found the turnoff to Nutbush. About 10
minutes later we came upon TINA TURNER HIGHWAY. I was so exited I could hardly contain myself.
Within no time we arrived in downtown Nutbush, Tennessee (all one general store of it).
The scenery was nice. There's lots of cotton everywhere. There was a general store,
church house and gin house (cotton plant) that Tina sings about in her song "Nutbush
City Limits. After taking a few pictures we went in to the general store to sign the
guest registry and out of nowhere, people started to emerge. What a lovely warm group
of people who received me with kindness. I feel blessed to have been able to speak
to few locals, see some cotton and walk the streets of Nutbush where Tina Turner was
born. The next day, we made our way to Graceland . After all, a trip to Tennessee
by the Queen of Rock and Roll wouldn't be complete without saying hello to the King of Rock and Roll.
